July 21-24, 2022
Thursday - Sunday
The Hiles Foray is an in-depth exploration in the Wisconsin Northwoods with dedicated fungi fans, including expert foray leaders 🍄
Hiles Schedule:
Thursday 21 - Check-in is at the Hiles Town Hall from noon to 4 PM, then at 5 PM everyone is welcome to dinner together on Thursday evening at Main Street Ed’s outdoor patio and at other local establishments nearby if we have too many people wanting to go for the space. We will all order as individuals and it is of course optional to attend. Last year the live music was lovely!
Friday 22 - First Big Foray Day! You can choose between the "full-day out" foray or two "half-day out" forays, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Table Talk with the mycologists about the finds will start later in the afternoon at the Town Hall. All forays are mycologist-led!
Saturday 23 - More Forays & Evening Dinner & Presentation. Full-day and half-day mycologist-led forays again on Saturday with Table Talk in the afternoon. Evening Dinner + Mycological Presentation by Tavis Lynch in the Hiles Town Hall. This will be a Potluck! The Hall building has a kitchenette with dishes we can use provided we clean. If event leaders have foraged edible fungi to share these will be incorporated into our dishes, and drinks will be provided. If you do not want to bring something to the potluck that is fine, but it is of course greatly encouraged!
Sunday 24 - Packing up, saying our goodbyes, and heading out. Many people independently go out alone or together to forage on their way out of the Hiles area.
We will have a detailed schedule for you with specific trails, trail lengths, mushroom & ecology notes, and foray leader. Expect to receive these details in June by email and available to you printed out on July 21 (Thursday) at check-in. All-day and two half-day forays each day allows you to pick and choose based on length of time you want to be out in the woods each day, and what trails appeal to you.
We will have organized car 'convoys' following a front car with a driver who knows the way in addition to the GPS address for each trailhead being available to everyone attending.
Please contact Mariah at mycologicalsocietywisconsin@gmail.com if you have any questions.
A few notes about registering:
We are able to process refunds. Ideally keep this to a minimum but we understand things change.
Kids - for this foray all kids (people under 18) along with your group will be considered free with your ticket. For "reasonable" numbers and guardianship of the kids, we will say that is 5 kids maximum per adult ticket. To bring minors to the foray you need to be able to act as their guardian and not expect foray leaders to act as such. You also need to be sure to keep an eye on them! But kids are welcome at the Hiles foray. Please "RSVP" the number of kids you are bringing by emailing WMS just so we keep track of numbers of attendees.
Who needs the "non-member" ticket? - WMS memberships are considered "family memberships" where a WMS member can count her or his immediate "household" as members too and select the member's ticket for each. Who is your household or family? That is a good question, but we have had it working well on the honor system so far so will leave it up to you.
If you are registering as a "non-member" and so getting WMS membership, please include an email WMS can actually reach you at. Thank you!
Hiles 2022, July 21-24: Expect to receive payment confirmation automatically to the email you provided with further foray details to follow in a few days.
